Wedding is the most auspicious and special occasions in the life of a girl, may it be an Indian marriage, an American wedding or a Bangladeshi marriage. The true importance of marriage for a bride cannot be easily explained in words. It is not only about finding the right match or getting all arrangements in place but for a bride looking the best on her wedding day is also a prime concern. Deciding on the perfect bridal jewelry is one of the most crucial matters for a bride anywhere in the world and it is no different for brides in Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi wedding that I particularly remember for the focus laid on bridal jewelry is my friend’s wedding. Sana-my Bangladeshi friend had spent weeks together to find the right bridal jewelry and accessories to accentuate her look on her wedding day.
Sana wanted her bridal jewelry to complement her wedding dress. She looked for different shops and spent several days to get dazzling jewelry pieces that would match with her wedding outfit and complete her look. Right from a richly-embellished kundan jadau necklace to heavy chandelier earrings done in red stones, nose rings, multi-colored waist band in gold to anklets, toe-rings and armlets, Sana got various bridal jewelry pieces in designs that looked fantastic with the zardosi work of her bridal dress. The jewelry articles that she bought were the items that are born by most brides in a Muslim marriage.
As Sana’s was an arranged marriage to a boy belonging to a traditional Bangladeshi family whom her parents found through one of the famous Bangladeshi matrimonial websites, she chose to wear the traditional bridal jewelry. Rather than going for chunky, modern, and light jewelry pieces that are most commonly seen in Bangladeshi Hindu marriage ceremonies, Sana preferred to sport the heavy yet sophisticated jewelry items. Some of the bridal jewelry pieces looked exquisitely beautiful and seemed as if they has been passed over to her by her great old grandmother who had preserved these precious items for her granddaughter’s wedding.
Crimson and green were the main colors in Sana’s wedding outfit and these colors also dominated her bridal jewelry. The kundan jewelry that she wore as a neckpiece had red rubies with green stones elegantly designed in well cut shapes. The waist band also had hint of silver, blue, purple and red along with the two other dominant colors. Bangles were gold studded with red and green stones in the center. The harmonized bridal jewelry pieces made Sana look very beautiful and elegant on her most special day.
If you are also planning to sport a fabulous look on your wedding day, it is highly recommended that you choose your bridal jewelry very carefully- the way Sana did! You can even surf over the Internet and get tips on your bridalwear and bridal jewelry.
I still preserve few pictures of Sana and when I show them to my friends, all of them seem to appreciate her selection.
